Patio and Pavilion by Penelope Curtis explores the beginnings of the increasingly interwoven relationship between architecture and sculpture, in an extensively illustrated text.

The brief stipulated a significant volume of footnotes must be placed opposite the main text. This is a typical demand of an academic book, but we decided to approach the brief in an unusual way. The outer two columns on each spread feature the main text in black ink, while the two inner columns feature the footnotes in the same size and weight, but in a muted grey text. All text is set in Univers, a font designed during the period in question, and reflecting the same modernist principles.

The resulting book has a usable and refined design that is satisfying to hold and use.

To avoid closely associating the book with any one of the many featured projects, an abstract representation of landscape and intervention (sculptural or architectural) features on the cover.
